Inverness City Breaks And A Number Of Excellent Visitor Attractions to Visit

Inverness, a city in the Scottish Highlands  is found in some of the most breathtaking countryside in the UK. In and around Inverness are a number of important historic sites, frequently these places lay witness to a large amount of human suffering and violence. Thankfully Inverness has a amazing selection of visitor attractions (and the number is always on the increase). In the following paragraphs I introduce readers to three places to visit in Inverness Inverness Museum, Inverness Castle and Beauly Priory:

Beauly Priory

It was in the Thirteenth century that Monks, from the Valliscaulian order, first set up a community at Beauly Priory. Sadly nobody is able to say the factual foundation date but it is commonly accepted that is would have been roughly around the year 1230. Sir John Bisset, whose lands were almagamated with the Fraser’s of Lovat, was the patron and landowner of Beauly. Sir John Bisset and the French monks are accepted as those who originally named Beauly, derived from the French for beautiful place (beau lieu). Unfortunately, Beauly Priory became deserted after the Scottish Reformation and stone blocks were utilized in the building of other structures. Historic Scotland now care for the priory ruins as it was passed into state hands in 1913.

Inverness Castle

Over the centuries there have been various structures on the site where you can now see Inverness Castle, evidence shows that the site had a structure there as far back as 1057. The first Inverness Castle was attacked by King Robert I of Scotland, and nearly destroyed. The castle you see today was designed and constructed by William Burn in 1836. The magnificent castle, constructed of red sandstone, hold a prominent position high on a cliff looking down over the River Ness and the cathedral on the opposite side. King James I of Scotland conducted parliament in Inverness Castle in 1427, and summoned all the Northern Chieftains to be in attendance. Alarmingly 3 of these chieftains were later condemed to death for their support of an independent sovereignty.

Inverness Museum and Art Gallery

Located in the middle of Inverness is the newly renovated Inverness Museum and Art Gallery which is really worth visiting especially if it is wet outside. Inside the museum one can enjoy Scottish History and discover how the Highlands are connected with the rest of the world. It is also possible to learn about the people of the Highlands, their traditions and culture. There are a lot of different collections featuring, wildlife, archaeology, fine arts, crafts, costumes and textiles.

If you are thinking about a vacation in Britain this year and you hope to spend a short time in Scotland, think about spending some time staying in Inverness. Finding Inverness hotel accommodation online is relatively easy as most establishments have their own web site.  Hotels in Inverness, small hotels, guest houses and bed and breakfasts are always of the finest quality and the Highlands are very well know for first class hospitality, so you can be certain of have a wonderful time.
